Microsoft has reverted the Photos & Videos rename of the Microsoft Photos app in Windows 10 Insider builds, now the app is known Microsoft Photos once more.
The firm, while currently expanding the remit of the Photos app to incorporate some features from Windows Movie maker is now testing different names for the service. Facebook’s Disaster Response Feature “Safety Check” is getting a small upgrade. The feature, which lets you communicate to friends and loved ones that you are safe in the wake of natural disasters and terrorist attacks has now been made a permanent fixture of Facebook, so users can know where they need to go in order to seek and/or offer help in the face of tragedy.

WhatsApp earlier this year introduced a Status feature similar to Snapchat’s stories. It allowed you to post photos/videos with the option of adding text and emoji to document your day for your WhatsApp contacts.
In an update to its mobile apps, you can easily share text only Statuses without needing to attach it to a media file, making it easier for the more camera shy to share their own WhatsApp statuses.

Along with the aouncement about Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Microsoft today aounced that they are also bringing Definitive Editions of Age of Empires II and Age of Empires III. One of the main promises of Continuum for Phones is that you would be able to travel without your laptop, and while it is still possible to get a lot of work done, the feature did have some issue with the end of the day when you hit the hotel room, with the popular Netflix streaming service not working on the big screen either as an app or in the Edge browser.

We posted earlier today that the ISDA Award-wiing Microsoft HoloLens Mixed Reality headset was out of production, and was surprised that this news surprised our readers, assuming it was common knowledge.
The news had telegraphed by main HoloLens supplier Himax for some time, and in their most recent FY Q2 2017 Results published the 4th August the CFO of Himax Jacqueline Chang, said:

The long-awaited day has finally arrived, and the Xbox One X, which Microsoft repeatedly notes is the most powerful console in the world, is finally available to pre-order.
To celebrate Microsoft has released a special edition of the device, the Project Scorpio version, keeping the now iconic code name alive for a bit longer.
The box for the console resemble the original Xbox, it features the old Xbox green colour, the case has a special texture with a gradient and the words “Project Scorpio Edition” in green lettering is emblazoned on the console and controller.

Sony briefly lost control of their twitter account this evening, as evidenced by a number of tweets being posted purportedly by a security group called OurMine.
The so-called white hats make a habit of breaking into companies to alert them of security holes, and on this occasion appears to be claiming much more than just the Twitter account, but also saying they breached the PlayStation Network Databases.
The tweets have now been deleted, signifying that Sony has regained control of their twitter account, but can be seen preserved in the screenshot above.

Microsoft’s speech recognition technology just hit human-level accuracy. The company’s research team aounced that its speech recognition system now has a Word Error Rate (WER) of only 5.1%. That’s down from the system’s previous WER of 5.9%. Redmond has been constantly advancing its speech recognition system over the year and has been able to bring it down to 5.1% from the 6.3% WER it achieved back in September of last year. The company was been able to reduce its error rate by a whopping 12% over the last year.
Previous reports have shown that the human word error rate is currently at 5,1%

Despite all its limitations and being more than two years old now the Microsoft HoloLens remains the best mixed reality headset, with competitors either still to launch (see Magic Leap) or lacking in significant ways, such as being tethered, being even bulkier, not actually being head-mounted (see ARKit) or lacking in offering a real platform for developers.

As aounced before, Intel today unveiled the 8th Generation (codenamed Coffee Lake) Intel Core processor family. They are starting with a range of mobile processors designed for thin and light notebooks and 2 in 1s. Intel claims that the 8th generation Intel Core processor (U-series) is Intel’s fastest 15W processor with up to 40 percent greater productivity than 7th Gen processors.

HTC is lowering the price of its Vive virtual reality headset. The hardware maker is cutting the price of the headset by a whopping $200 in order to make it more accessible to the mass market. HTC Vive now costs $599 with the price cut, which means it’s now the same price as Facebook’s Oculus Rift. HTC hopes the price cut will lead to increase adoption of its Vive virtual reality headset, but $599 for a virtual reality headset might still be quite steep for the regular consumer.

When we last wrote about the newly leaked renders of Fitbit’s Project Higgs smartwatch we concentrated more on the appearance of the device and rumours around its app store, but ReadWrite.com notes that they reveal something much more important, at least when it comes to Fitbit’s future in the wearables market place.

While the star of today’s Xbox Gamescom 2017 aouncement is expected to the Xbox One X (which had an early preview here) it seems Microsoft is also working on a little something for their more mainstream console.
Surface-phone.it reports that Microsoft briefly posted a video promoting a new Xbox One S: Minecraft Limited Edition console on the official Minecraft Facebook page, removing it after 30 minutes.
The video also included a link to order the customized console here, which is currently not live, but should be later today we assume.

If one were to listen to Microsoft, the Feedback Hub is one of the most important ways Windows 10 is being built and shaped, but by tying the service to an app they have made it extremely inaccessible, with even aouncements not available for users when who don’t happen to be on their Windows 10 PC.
In response to a complaint about the very issue, Windows fan @tfwboredom used his spare time to knock up a website in 24 hours which provides access to the aouncements from any browser, something which Microsoft is apparently plaing but has not been able to do for more than a year now.
